All of us aware of the digital revolution India is undergoing. With easy access to the internet, there's been a sharp increase in digital transactions as well across the country. Today, more people living in semi-urban and rural areas are part of the banking and financial system than at any time since independence. And this is facilitating the direct transfer of subsidies and other funds to crores of beneficiaries. But, this is only one side of the digital banking story. The increasing digital adoption has also led to rapid online payment fraud. Data shows the volume of cyber fraud at banks has doubled in a year. According to a report by the Reserve Bank of India, a total of 2,059 cases of cyber fraud were reported in 2017-18 amounting to Rs 109.6 crore. The number of cyber fraud cases in 2016-17 was 1,372 amounting to Rs 42.3 crore. Studies show that 1 in every 4 customers is a victim of online fraud in India. The latest to fall prey to such a fraud is former CJI RM Lodha, who was duped of Rs 1 lakh after the email account of his colleague was hacked. In a stern message to WhatsApp, the government on Tuesday said the messaging platform will need to set up a local entity and find a tech solution to trace the origin of fake messages on its platform. Union minister of information technology Ravi Shankar Prasad, after meeting WhatsApp head Chris Daniels, said the Facebook-owned messaging application has contributed significantly to India's digital story but it needs to find solutions to deal with “sinister developments” like mob lynching and revenge porn. The internet is a global network connecting million of computers. It has revolutionized communication, and methods of commerce and is considered a boon to all. Though the internet has brought many positives to our lives, the ill effects of addiction to internet and digital technology are now becoming a cause of concern. As compared to 5 million in 2000 , there were about 462 million internet users in June 2017 in India, and this number is further expected to reach 700 million by 2020. India's monthly wireless data usage also rose to 1.3 billion GB in March 2017 from 200 million GB in June 2016. In this scenario the youth, specially students and working professionals, are most susceptible to developing internet or mobile phone addiction because they are generally the heaviest users of information and technology. The high-level panel on data protection framework on Friday submitted its report to the government, suggesting steps for safeguarding personal information, defining obligations of data processors as also rights of individuals, and mooting penalties for violation. Headed by Justice B N Srikrishna, the panel handed the report to IT Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, wrapping up nearly one year of deliberations that touched upon sensitive and controversial issues. Justice Srikrishna said privacy has become a burning issue and therefore, every effort has to be made to protect data at any cost. He added that report straddles three aspects - citizens, the state and the industry. He stated that this report is the first step and as technology changes, it may become necessary to fine tune the law keeping with the changes. A day after Larsen & Toubro announced its plans to acquire up to 66 per cent stake in Mindtree, the promoters of the Bengaluru-based IT company on Tuesday vowed to oppose the hostile takeover bid. Calling it a “grave threat” to the company, they said the acquisition lacked “any strategic advantage”. L&T reached an agreement with V G Siddhartha, the owner of Coffee Day Trading and Coffee Day Enterprises, to acquire a 20.32 per cent stake in Mindtree at Rs 980 per share, aggregating to around Rs 3,300 crore. It has also placed an order to acquire an additional 15 per cent stake from the open market. And, apart from this, it wants to purchase 31 per cent stake of the outstanding shares through an open offer. With 66.32 per cent stake in Mindtree, L&T would become the majority shareholder. The board members of Mindtree, meanwhile, are expected to meet on Wednesday, to consider the proposal of a buyback of shares of the company. As people are gradually moving towards a cashless age, digital frauds are also on the rise. According to a conservative estimate, 1 in 4 customers using credit cards or ATMs has been a victim of online fraud in India, while 24% people directly experienced fraud while transacting online last year. Card skimming and cloning cases are reported from all across the country, forcing the RBI to direct banks to upgrade their ATMs. People were asked to upgrade their magnetic-stripe cards with EMV chip-based ones for safer transactions. India's largest nationalized bank-The State Bank of India has even reduced ATM cash withdrawals to Rs 20,000 a day due to rising incidents of ATM-skimming fraud. It seems hackers have found new tricks to clone even the highly-secure chip cards.
